In the spring of 2021, Recreation Services at Communitas will begin in-person programming for the first time since the service shutdowns in the Spring of 2020.
What is the new Recreation Course?
Recreation’s Skills and Drills program is an outdoor basketball program, the most popular activity in Communitas Recreation, built to develop basketball skills for athletes. There are two Recreation Skills & Drills programs running 8-10 weeks in duration. Classes are available at the RecDesk website.
The transition for Recreation to return to in-person programming is much-needed for those who work and participate in Recreation. Creating a fully online program wasn’t easy; Recreation programming previously consisted of close person-to-person athletic activities outdoors or in our Muni Recreation Center.
“Our activities changed from in-person instruction to completely online via Zoom. This brought a vast number of changes to the activities we offer. Recreation’s goal for online programming is to provide a variety of unique opportunities focusing mainly on social engagement, healthy eating, movement and fitness.” – Jess Veins, Recreation Director
Online programming, which spans from Dance and Fitness Classes to “Nature Adventures” and “Brunch with Rec”, has been reliant on creativity while helping Recreation participants navigate online. Soon, that same creativity and joy will find itself on the basketball course.
Why is Recreation important?
Our Recreation Program fundamentals – healthy activity in a social environment – have many benefits, such as improving one’s overall physical, emotional and cognitive health; managing stress, increased self-esteem, and an improved overall quality of life. Recreation activities create opportunities to build relationships, reduce stress and have fun.
Communitas Recreation’s programming provides participants with an increased opportunity for social interaction, physical movement & exercise, a sense of structure, and community.
How can I be a part of Recreation?
The Communitas Recreation program is entirely funded by community grants, as well as donations and contributions from community members like you. Although we are filled with joy to be able to bring back in-person Recreation programming, the financial implications of the Covid-19 pandemic means it is more important than ever to contribute to Recreation Programming – which wouldn’t be possible without your donation.
Each $10 donation can provide one Skills & Drills class for a Recreation athlete.
